A half-day visit to a northern Puglia winery

Location:
This winery is located in the municipality of Agro di Cerignola, in Northern Puglia. The winery’s vineyards extend across the Daunia region in the Basso Tavoliere plain, flanked on the north by the Gargano peninsula, on the west by the Subapennine Daunian mountains, and on the east by the Gulf of Manfredonia.
Owner:
Angelo Paradiso (3rd generation). The winery is 60 years old. Today, Angelo, the founder’s grandson, is carrying on the work begun over sixty years ago.
Production:
They are a big producer that primarily makes bulk wine. They process 1,000,000 kg of grapes every year. They are now beginning to make bottled wine. Teo is the winemaker for the bottled wine production, while another winemaker oversees the bulk wine production.
Primary Grape:
Nero di Troia Puglia IGP
Other Red Grapes:
Primitivo Puglia IGP, Negroamaro Puglia IGP, Lambrusco, Sangiovese, Merlot
White Grapes:
Fiano Greco, Bombino (a probable variant of the better-known Trebbiano)
Rose Grape:
Nero di Troia – The juice is extracted a few hours after fermentation begins and is vinified as a white.
Blends:
Primitivo/Nero di Troia, Negroamaro/Malvasia Nera
Resident Winemaker (one of two):
Filippo Scala. Has a master’s degree in enology and viticulture from the university in Asti, close to Turin.
